Date and time: 4th October, 1.30 p.m. to 16.45 p.m.
Location: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Main Building, A wing, 11th floor, room 22 (HG 11 A 22).

Paul Tillich is one of the most important theologian/philosopher of the 20th century. His way to relate relation to culture will be discussed at this conference. Different from the common move to play them off against each other, Tillich attempts to reconcile them. In particular, the following aspects of his theology/philosophy will be discussed:

- His theory that revelation does not provide factual knowledge but implies a particular way at looking at reality (a ‘Gestaltwechsel’);
- The question what role the German subject philosophy plays in Tillich’s approach;
- Tillich’s view on the interreligious dialogue (‘We should respect other religions because the Absolute is absolute’).
- The question how Tillich’s attempt to synthesize religion and culture relates to Karl Barth’s attempt to play them off against each other.

Main speaker is the internationally leading Tillich expert, Werner Schüßler (Faculty of Theology, University of Trier). Katja Tolstaya, Wessel Stoker, Henk van den Belt (all Faculty Religion & Theology, Vrije Universiteit) and Rick Benjamins (Protestant Theological University, Amsterdam) will also hold presentations on different aspects of Tillich’s theology.
At this conference, the book Offenbarung, absolute Wahrheit und interreligiöser Dialog. Studien zur Theologie Paul Tillichs (Dirk-Martin Grube, de Gruyter, 2019) will also be launched.

Hopefully this conference will help to make Tillich more popular in the Dutch intellectual environment. His way of pursuing theology as a true philosopher and pursuing philosophy as a true theologian is of interest to both secularists and religious believers.
