Born in Schiedam (1964), I studied theology at the Evangelical Theological Faculty in Louvain, Belgium (lic. theol., 1987, doctoral studies, 1987-1990) and at the University of Durham, United Kingdom (Ph.D. 1996). I wrote my lic. thesis on the hermeneutic theory of the Italian philosopher of law Emilio Betti (1987) and a second thesis during my doctoral studies on the history of New Testament interpretation (1990). My doctoral dissertation was written under the supervision of prof. J.D.G. Dunn (Durham) on The Ascension of the Messiah in Lukan Christology and published by Brill in 1997.
I was subsequently lecturer in New Testament and Hermeneutics at the Evangelische Theologische Hogeschool in Veenendaal (now Ede), where I was Dean of Studies and Vice-Director from 1998-2003, especially charged with curriculum development and quality assessment. Since March 2004 I teach New Testament and Hermeneutics at the VU University Amsterdam, where I also coordinated a master program initiated by the Center of Evangelical and Reformation Theology (CERT) from 2003-2006. From 1988 to 2003 I co-authored and co-edited the Dutch Studiebijbel, a 17-volume commentary series on the New Testament, based on the principles of Th. Gilbrant’s Studienbibel (Sweden), including a six-volume Greek-Dutch dictionary and concordance. I also teach New Testament and Hermeneutics at Ede Christian University (Theology; Religious Education). From 2006 till 2011 I was a member of the Editorial Board of Theologisch Debat. Since 2011, I am Executive Editor of the Amsterdam Studies in Theology and Religion (AmSTaR), a newly launched refereed series published by VU University Press.
In 2004, I published a monograph on Judas and the Choice of Matthias. A Study on Context and Concern of Acts 1:15-26, published by Mohr Siebeck. In 2009, the first volume of my historical introduction to biblical hermeneutics (Tussen tekst en lezer) was published at VU University Press, with a second edition in 2010.  Recently, a volume of scholarly essays on the Acts of the Apostles has been published at Mohr Siebeck, entitled Christ, the Spirit and the Community of God. Essays on the Acts of the Apostles (Tübingen 2010). To be published soon: C. van der Kooi, E. van Staalduine, A.W. Zwiep (ed.), Evangelical Theology in Transition. I am presently – when time permits – working on Volume II of my historical introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics: Tussen tekst en lezer. Een historische inleiding in de bijbelse hermeneutiek. In this volume, I focus especially on the interaction of biblical interpretation with the work of   the three masters of suspicion (Marx, Nietzsche, Freud), Dilthey, Troeltsch, Barth, Bultmann, New Hermeneutic, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Paul Ricoeur, Umberto Eco, Reader-Response Criticism (Iser, Jauss, Fish), Wittgenstein, Speech Act Theory, Structuralism, Post-Structuralism, Liberation theologies, Derrida, postmodern hermeneutics, autobiographical criticism etc., etc.

• [SUMMARY] In view of recent forceful challenges to the authenticity of the so-called “longer (non-Western) text” of Luke 24:50-53 in conjunction with calls to treat individual Western readings more seriously, this investigation undertakes a critical reexamination of Lk 24:50-53 and Acts 1:1-2,9-11 in light of external evidence, transcriptional probabilities, and Luke's style and theology. It concludes that a development from the B-text to the Western text yields a more convincing and consistent explanation of the evidence than the reverse. The Western reviser quite consistently removes any suggestion that Jesus ascended physically into heaven. The 2nd- and 3rd-century christological controversies provide a most plausible setting in which such a radical reinterpretation of the ascension narrative could take place (C.R.M. in NTA 40/3, 1996,428).
