Curriculum Vitae - Brief résumé

Born in Schiedam (1964), I studied theology at the Evangelical Theological Faculty in Louvain, Belgium (lic. theol., 1987, doctoral studies, 1987-1990) and at the University of Durham, United Kingdom (Ph.D. 1996). I wrote my lic. thesis on the hermeneutic theory of the Italian philosopher of law Emilio Betti (1987) and a second thesis during my doctoral studies on the history of New Testament interpretation (1990). My doctoral dissertation was written under the supervision of prof. J.D.G. Dunn (Durham) on The Ascension of the Messiah in Lukan Christology (1996) and published by Brill in 1997. From 1988 to 2003, I co-authored and co-edited the Dutch Studiebijbel, a 17-volume commentary series on the New Testament, based on the principles of Th. Gilbrant’s Studienbibel (Sweden), including a six-volume Greek-Dutch dictionary and concordance. From 1997-2004, I was Dean of Studies (directeur onderwijs) and Senior Lecturer in New Testament and Hermeneutics at the Evangelische Theologische Hogeschool in Veenendaal (now Ede), especially charged with curriculum development and quality assessment. From 2004-2012, I was Lecturer in New Testament and Hermeneutics at the Christelijke Hogeschool Ede (Ede Christian University of Applied Sciences), at the departments of Theology and Religious Education. Since 2004 I teach New Testament and Hermeneutics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. I am a member of a number of professional societies, including SNTS and SBL (more details on my personal homepage).

Research activities

My current research interests in New Testament studies are the Acts the Apostles (everything!), the Synoptic Gospels (Mk and Lk). and early exaltation Christology. My special areas of hermeneutical interest are orality studies and performance criticism, reader-response criticism, the relevance of Gadamer, Ricoeur and Derrida for New Testament interpretation, and the reading of sacred texts in a secular (postmodern) age. I am currently writing a massive monograph on The Way of Faith: A Critical and Exegetical Analysis of the Pericope of Jairus's Daugther and the Haemorrhaging Woman (Mark 5:21-43; Matt 9:18-26; Luke 9:40-56).
